Organic Folinic Acid

Folinic acid is a bioactive form of folate that bypasses several activation steps required by folic acid and can be readily used by the body, making it a supportive option for individuals with reduced MTHFR enzyme activity. ✝︎

Note: Always speak to your doctor before starting a new supplement regimen for yourself or your children.

How To Take Folinic Acid

You may simply mix Folinic Acid into water, juice, or your child’s favorite drink, or place it directly between the cheek and gum.

Each drop provides: 500 mcg folinic acid (833 mcg DFE)

Dosage will depend on your or your child’s unique bio-individuality and your doctor's guidance. Always start low and slowly build up if a higher dose is desired.

Shake well before each use.
Store in cool, dry place.

Warning: Keep out of reach of children.

Dosage in Clinical Research #1

A 2024 randomized controlled trial in the European Journal of Pediatrics used 2 mg of folinic acid per kilogram of body weight daily (up to a maximum of 50 mg per day) for 24 weeks in children with autism spectrum disorder (1)*.

*This represents a therapeutic, research-level dose. For general wellness support, most families start with 1–2 drops per day and increase gradually as advised by their practitioner.

Here is what the therapeutic dosages outlined in the 2024 randomized controlled trial in the European Journal of Pediatrics would look like by weight:

33 lb

Dosage in Clinical Research #2

In a separate observational study published in the Journal of International Medical Research, adults with chronic plaque psoriasis were given calcium folinate (15 mg orally once daily) for variable periods depending on clinical response. Researchers reported improvement in psoriasis severity with no observed side effects, while participants receiving conventional systemic therapies experienced more frequent adverse reactions (2).

**Important Context:

These findings suggest that calcium folinate was well-tolerated at a daily dose of 15 mg in adults within the study setting, a much lower dose than the one used in the European Journal of Pediatrics trial. This highlights how different dosages may be appropriate for different purposes, populations, and individual needs.

While higher doses have been studied for targeted therapeutic use under clinical supervision, lower doses may still provide meaningful nutritional or cellular support as part of a general wellness plan. Because folate metabolism varies from person to person, it’s always best to start low, go slow, and follow your healthcare provider’s guidance when introducing any new supplement.

Recommended Uses

Recent research, including a 2024 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the European Journal of Pediatrics, suggests that oral folinic acid supplementation can safely support neurological and behavioral health in children, particularly in those with high levels of folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAA). ✝︎

The study found that children receiving oral folinic acid (2 mg/kg/day, up to 50 mg/day) for 24 weeks showed greater improvement in measures of social interaction, communication, and behavior compared to placebo, without any adverse effects. ✝︎

Folate is essential for methylation (3), a process the body uses to make and repair DNA, regulate gene activity, produce neurotransmitters, and support detoxification (4). ✝︎

Folinic acid provides folate in a form that the body can use more easily than synthetic folic acid. This helps keep methylation running smoothly. ✝︎

Folate is essential before, during, and after pregnancy to support both mom and baby (5). It helps with healthy cell growth, energy, and the baby’s developing brain and spinal cord. Folinic acid is a non-methylated, easily used form of folate that supports women who may not process synthetic folic acid efficiently. ✝︎

Folate plays a role in healthy cell division and repair (6), processes that are especially active in tissues with rapid renewal, such as the skin.

By providing folate in a form the body can readily use, folinic acid helps maintain normal cell growth and repair, supporting smoother, more resilient skin and a balanced inflammatory response. ✝︎

FAQs

What’s the difference between folic acid, folinic acid, and methyl folate?

All three are forms of vitamin B9 (folate), but your body uses them very differently.

Folic acid is the synthetic form found in most fortified foods and conventional vitamins. It isn’t active in the body and must go through several conversion steps to become useful. For many people, especially those with a MTHFR gene variant, this conversion happens slowly or inefficiently, and in some cases, unmetabolized folic acid can build up in the blood without providing the same benefits as active folate (7).

Folinic acid (also called calcium folinate) is a natural, already-active form of folate that bypasses the early conversion steps required by folic acid (8). It can easily transform into other forms of folate (including methyl folate) as the body needs them. Because it isn’t methylated yet, it’s often gentler and better tolerated by people who are sensitive to methylated supplements.

Methyl folate (5-MTHF) is the fully activated form of folate that your body uses directly in methylation, the process that supports DNA repair, detoxification, and neurotransmitter balance. It’s the most “ready-to-use” form, especially helpful for people with MTHFR variants, but can sometimes feel stimulating for those who are sensitive (9). ✝︎

Can adults and children both use Folinic Acid?

Yes. Folinic acid is suitable for all ages and is often used by:

  • Women before, during, and after pregnancy
  • Children with increased folate needs for growth and development
  • Individuals with methylation or detoxification challenges

Can I take Folinic Acid if I’m already taking a multivitamin?

Most multivitamins contain only small amounts of folate or folic acid. Folate is water-soluble, and excess amounts are generally excreted; however, very high supplemental intakes may mask vitamin B12 deficiency, or cause you to feel temporarily unwell. Check with your healthcare provider to ensure your total folate intake is right for you.

Is Folinic Acid the same as leucovorin?

Leucovorin is a pharmaceutical brand name for a prescription form of calcium folinate - the same active ingredient as folinic acid. Dr. Green Life™ Organic Folinic Acid provides this same nutrient in an organic dietary supplement form.

Are there any side effects?

Folinic acid is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, some individuals may experience mild digestive upset, restlessness, or temporary sleep changes when starting any new B-vitamin supplement. If this occurs, reduce the dose or discontinue use.
