Uses of Natal•K™

This guide provides general descriptions of the recommended uses of Natal K™ and frequently asked questions. Always speak to your doctor before starting a new supplement regimen for yourself or your children.

Vitamin K1 for Infants✝︎

Infants are born low in vitamin K1. Though all infants are recommended a vitamin K1 injection at birth, some parents choose to give their infants vitamin K1 oral supplementation in addition to, or instead of, injected vitamin K1.

Below is one possible dosing strategy for vitamin K1 for infants. However, there are other options, so speak to your healthcare provider for individual guidance.

Example of the Denmark Study Dosing Strategy Using Natal K™:

  • Day 1 (birth day or as soon as possible):
    • Give 4 Drops
  • 7 days later (one week after the first dose):
    • Give 2 drops once per week for 12 weeks.

Natal K™ should be given after a fat-containing meal for maximum absorption. (Formula and breastmilk are both fat-containing meals.) If there is reflux within 1 hour, refer to the FAQ section below for redosing guidance.

Vitamin K1 for Pregnant Women✝︎

Vitamin K1 is important for pregnant women as it supports healthy blood clotting.✝︎ Most people are able to consume adequate vitamin K1 through diet and prenatal vitamin supplementation. Adequate intake for pregnant women is 90 mcg/day. However, there are some cases in which pregnant women need additional vitamin K1, and Natal•K™ may be a helpful supplement.✝︎

Consult your physician for guidance.

Vitamin K1 for Breastfeeding Women✝︎

Vitamin K1 may be taken by breastfeeding women to enrich the vitamin K1 content of their breastmilk to levels comparable to those of formula.✝︎

The dose of vitamin K1 shown to enrich breastmilk is 5 mg per day, which is equal to 10 drops of Natal K™ per day.

Natal K™ Dosage for Breastfeeding Moms:

  • 10 drops per day for 12 weeks

Natal•K™ should be taken after a fat-containing meal for maximum absorption.

Vitamin K1 for Health Promotion✝︎

High dietary vitamin K intake is associated with improved cardiovascular health.✝︎ Natal•K™ has a high dose of vitamin K1, which may be more than what is optimal for daily health promotion. Weekly, monthly, or seasonal dosing may be more appropriate.

Consult your physician for guidance.

Vitamin K1 for Those at Risk for Vitamin K1 Deficiency✝︎

Certain conditions and medications put people at increased risk for vitamin K1 deficiency. Natal•K™ may be helpful in treating or preventing vitamin K1 deficiency.✝︎

Consult your physician for guidance.

How To Take Natal•K™

Use the dropper provided with the supplement and drop the vitamin K1 liquid directly onto the tongue. For optimal absorption, consume after a fat-containing meal. For infants, formula and breastmilk are both fat-containing meals.

  • 1 drop = 500 mcg

Use the provided dropper to count individual drops. Dosing is based on drops, not dropperfuls.

FAQs

Spit-up within 1 hour?

According to most oral vitamin K protocols, if your baby spits up within 1 hour of giving Natal•K™, repeat the dose at the next feeding. Consult your healthcare provider to see if this applies to you and for further assistance.

Missed a dose?

According to most oral vitamin K protocols, if you have missed a dose of Natal•K™ for your infant, simply give the missing dose at the next feeding if less than 48 hours have passed. Consult your healthcare provider to see if this applies to you and for further assistance.

Gave too many drops?

Vitamin K1 has a very low risk of toxicity; however, this is a medical question and should be directed to your doctor or midwife.✝︎ Consult your healthcare provider for assistance.

Late starting Natal•K™?

If Natal•K™ is not started on the same day as birth, families should consult their pediatrician or midwife for guidance on next steps.

Had the vitamin K shot?

Yes, in some cases infants can have both oral vitamin K and injected vitamin K.✝︎ Consult a healthcare provider to determine if this is right for your child.

Who should use Natal•K™ with caution?

It is our opinion that Natal•K™ should not be used for infants who are premature, high risk, unwell, or who have cholestasis or diarrhea.

Vitamin K1 and antibiotics can interact due to antibiotics potentially reducing vitamin K levels in the body. Antibiotics can disrupt the gut bacteria responsible for vitamin K production, which may lead to a deficiency, especially with prolonged use. Those currently taking antibiotics should consult with their physician for guidance.

Natal•K™ is not recommended for babies born to mothers who are taking carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampicin or warfarin at the time of delivery.

Additionally, vitamin K should be used with caution by those with glucose 6 phosphate deficiency and/or kidney disease. Speak to your healthcare provider.

Vitamin K interacts with certain drugs, including warfarin, phenytoin, orlistat, olestra, some cholesterol-lowering medications, some antibiotics, and others. Anyone currently taking these drugs should consult their physician for guidance.

Can you take too much vitamin K1?

Vitamin K1 has very low toxicity potential and as of now there is no upper limit identified. ✝︎ However, it may be possible to take too much vitamin K1. Consult your doctor to find out what is right for you.

Is Natal•K™ safe for all ages?

People of all ages can take Natal•K™. For individual advice, consult your healthcare provider.

Can Natal•K™ be taken with multivitamins?

Yes, Natal•K™ can be taken with multivitamins. Consult a healthcare provider to determine if this is right for you or your child.

Vitamin K1 vs K2 — what’s the difference?

Vitamin K1 is the dominant form of vitamin K found in the diet. It is present in many vegetables, predominantly leafy greens. Vitamin K2 is primarily found in meat and food that has undergone processing by bacteria (e.g. sauerkraut, cheese, natto). Vitamin K2 is also synthesized by gut bacteria - approximately 50% of our vitamin K requirement is produced by our microbiome.✝︎

Vitamin K1 is primarily known for its essential role in the blood clotting system. Vitamin K2 is primarily known for its benefits to bone health, cardiovascular health, and metabolic health.✝︎
