FAQ: Can My Child Take Motrin® or Tylenol® with Temperature Tamer™ or Nature Profen™?

A father and mother give their daughter a spoonful of medicine.

You don’t have to choose between natural remedies and modern medicine. Fortunately, modern medicine and herbs work beautifully together!

When it comes to supporting your child's health during an occasional fever or mild discomfort, the combination of natural remedies and modern medicine often brings up a common question: Can herbal remedies like Temperature Tamer™ Kids or Nature Profen™ Kids be paired with over-the-counter medications like Motrin® or Tylenol®?

This article goes into detail about our herbal remedies Temperature Tamer™ Kids and Nature Profen™ Kids and provides information on how they can be used in combination with over-the-counter painkillers when necessary.

Temperature Tamer™ Kids and Nature Profen™ Kids: How Do They Work?

Temperature Tamer™ Kids and Nature Profen™ Kids are two of our doctor-formulated herbal remedies that are great natural choices for supporting the body’s fever response and promoting a healthy inflammatory response.✝︎

  • Temperature Tamer™ Kids contains calming lemon balm aerial parts, catnip, elderflower, and chamomile to provide comfort during occasional mild fevers and illnesses. It is important to note that this remedy doesn’t aim to lower the fever directly, as fevers play a vital role in fighting infections (1), but rather provides herbal support to help soothe the body and support the immune response (2,3).✝︎

  • Nature Profen™ Kids contains a blend of lemon balm aerial parts, yarrow leaf and flower, fennel seed, turmeric root, spilanthes flowering herb, ginger root, and black pepper fruit to support the inflammatory response (4-7). This herbal remedy is a wonderful gentle option for occasional mild discomfort.✝︎

Both Tylenol® and Motrin® are over-the-counter painkillers that are generally regarded as safe for use in children and are usually the first-in-line treatment option for occasional discomfort or fever reduction.

  • Tylenol® (acetaminophen) works by acting on the brain to reduce the perception of pain and regulate body temperature, making it effective for managing mild to moderate pain and lowering fever. It does not have anti-inflammatory properties, so it is not used to reduce swelling or inflammation in the body.

  • Motrin® (Ibuprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting enzymes involved in the production of prostaglandins—chemical messengers that cause inflammation, pain, and fever. This makes ibuprofen effective for reducing inflammation as well as alleviating pain and fever.

Combining Natural Remedies and Modern Medicine

As a mom and naturopathic medical doctor, I believe in using the best of both worlds to address your child’s needs. While natural remedies offer gentle, effective support, there are moments when modern medicine provides that extra help to ensure comfort and healing. Both modern medicine and herbal care have their place. What matters most is getting your child the very best care!

How to Use Herbs and Medicine Together

If your child is experiencing fever, aches, or pains, you can start with Temperature Tamer ™ Kids or Nature Profen™ Kids, and if more relief is needed, you can add ibuprofen or acetaminophen.✝︎

Here’s how:

  1. Start with the natural remedy: Use Temperature Tamer™ or Nature Profen™ Kids at the onset of mild discomfort or feverishness to provide gentle support.✝︎

  1. Add medication if needed: If your child’s fever or discomfort persists or becomes more intense and 3-4 hours have passed since their last dosage of Temperature Tamer™ or Nature Profen ™ Kids, you can administer ibuprofen or acetaminophen according to the dosage instructions on the label or your doctor’s guidance.

  1. Pause the herbal remedy: If administering over the counter medication, stop the use of herbal remedy until the over-the-counter medication is no longer needed.

  1. Monitor symptoms: Continue to monitor your child’s symptoms. Severe discomfort or high fevers that do not respond to acetaminophen or ibuprofen, or symptoms worsen or last more than a few days, need to be evaluated by a doctor.

Temperature Tamer™ and Nature Profen™ Kids can be used together. The specifics of how to combine these remedies are explained in this article:

Summary

You can safely combine Temperature Tamer™ or Nature Profen™ Kids with ibuprofen (Motrin®) or acetaminophen (Tylenol®) to support your child's health during a mild fever or discomfort.✝︎ Natural medicine and herbal medicine are often pitted against each other. I want to stress that you don’t have to choose between natural remedies and modern medicine: it is not about “picking a side." It is about using all the tools available to you to provide your family with the best possible support. Fortunately, modern medicine and herbs work beautifully together!
